Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission or listed building consent for solar panels or a heat pump?

Yes — if your building is listed or within a conservation area, most renewable energy systems (including solar PV, solar thermal, or air source heat pumps) will require planning permission and/or listed building consent. We’ll advise on what consents are needed based on your specific property.

Can I install solar panels on a listed building?

Yes — with the right approach. Many listed buildings have successfully integrated solar energy, especially where systems are discreetly located and do not harm the character or historic fabric. We prepare clear, well-justified applications that align with local and national heritage policy.

What if I live in a conservation area?

Conservation areas are subject to special planning controls, especially regarding visual impact. Solar panels on street-facing roofs, for example, are unlikely to be permitted. However, there are often acceptable alternatives — we’ll help find a solution that works.

How long does the consent process take?

Once submitted, planning and listed building applications typically take 8-10 weeks to determine. If pre-application advice is sought, or further heritage assessments are needed, this may extend the timeline. We’ll guide you through every step and keep things moving.

Will the council approve my application?

There are no guarantees, but we specialise in making successful applications by working within the framework of heritage policy. We only recommend proceeding when we believe there’s a strong chance of approval — and we’ll be upfront about any risks.

Can I get renewable energy grants or funding?

There are occasional grants and support schemes for low-carbon retrofit, especially for listed and historic homes. We can advise on the current landscape and signpost to relevant funding bodies, though we do not administer grants directly.

Do you install the systems as well?

No — we focus on design, planning and consent. However, we can recommend trusted renewable energy engineers and installers experienced in working with heritage buildings.

What are your fees?

Our fees are based on the complexity of your property and the scope of work. We offer fixed-price packages for most consent applications, starting from £500+VAT for initial heritage and planning reviews. A full proposal will be provided once we understand your building and goals.

What happens if my application is refused?

If an application is refused, we can support you with an appeal, revised application, or alternative design approach. We aim to avoid refusal by identifying risks early and maintaining close contact with planning officers throughout.
